2011 Black Belt grading

Picture: News image 1

A fantastic result was achieved at AKA Karate Black Belt Academy on Saturday 9th April with the grading of eleven new Black Belts. Ten to 1st Dan and One to 2nd Dan.

Sensei Brian Seabright 7th Dan, Chairman of the British Karate Association travelled down from Manchester to grade the AKA students.

The students who were grading trained for two hours in the morning with other AKA students and after a lunch break they were ready to grade.

The grading commenced with a run from the Earl Street dojo (training hall), all around Alexandra Park. On returning the hard work started with a fitness assessment requiring press-ups, sit-ups and squat thrusts.

All the students then had to perform a variety of traditional karate techniques; this was followed by combinations of punches and kicking, with varying degrees of complexity.

The next part of the grading each student had to perform kata (a series of moves done in a specific order}, ten for the 1st Dans and twelve for the 2nd Dan. They then had to perform kihon (traditional moves with a partner).

The next part of the grading was bag work, where each student had to punch and kick a heavy bag continuously for three minutes; there were five rounds of this. The final part of the grading was free sparring. By now everyone was tired, all they had to do was fight a variety of AKA students, including existing Black Belts. The sparring lasted over an hour.

After the exhausting grading Sensei Brian Seabright presented each of them with the coveted Black Belt.

Sensei Seabright congratulated the students and Sensei Paul Banbury AKA Chief
Instructor, on the high standard achieved.
